Money doesn’t buy happines s
As part of the environmental group on campus, my friends and I recently invited a recent college graduate,
Colin Davis, to lecture about his deeds in climate change.
Davis graduated from Trinity College last spring. Despite a tempting(诱人的)internship(实习期)from
Goldman Sachs that thousands of people dream about. Davis chose to ride a bike across the US to interview
environmental experts.
Davis wasn’t a born environmentalist. To prove his bike ride, he had to find a “trendy(新潮的), sexy and
good cause”. The cause was climate change. But Davis became more concerned than ever about this issue after
the cross-country bike ride. He read hundreds of books on climate change and environmental consultin g. Now, he
works for non-profitable organizations and serves as a consultant for energy efficiency.
One of his messages during his talk, “shopping with a moral in mind” occurred in my mind again and again

throughout the day.
Facing two similar products in a market, do we stop and read the back before throwing the product into our
cart(推车)? We all live in a fast-paced society, but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take a minute to choose a
product that’s safer for our bodies and better for the environment. Davis made me know how important it is to
be a smart consumer, by supporting organic(有机的)food and green products instead of only looking at the brands.
With little age gap and his unique way of presenting serious messages in a light tone, Davis captured the attention
of most non “hardcore(中坚的)environmentalists” students. Davis said, “Working for a good cause makes me
feel better than being an investment(投资)banker. ”
56. The bike ride across the US___________.
A. realized Davis’s long-time dream of finding out more about climate change
B. had Davis regretting refusing the internship from Goldman Sachs
C. made Davis all the more fascinated by the issue of climate change
D. satisfied Davis because he had made it trendy and profitable
C。 由第三段的“But Davis became more concerned than ever about this issue after
the cross-country bike ride. He read hundreds of books on climate change and environmental consulting. Now, he
works for non-profitable organizations and serves as a consultant for energy efficiency.
57. “Shopping with a moral in mind” means that_________.
A. one should be a smart consumer by calculating the product’s value against price
B. we should stop and read the instructions about calories or health ingredients
C. we should choose more environmentally-friendly products
D. it’s a good point to buy brand products
C。 . . Davis made me know how important it is to be a smart consumer,
by supporting organic food and green products instead of only looking at the brands.
“Shopping with a moral in mind”,因此 C 项为最佳选项。
58. From the text, we can see the author is________.
A. a college student who is seeking advice about his career
B. interested in getting a job in Goldman Sachs
C. a fresh-out-of-college graduate
D. an enthusiastic environmentalist

B. Davis did a great job in raising environmental awareness
C. you have to be rich enoug h to support organic food

A college education can be very costly in the United States, especially at a private school. Rising costs have
led more and more families to borrow money to help pay for college.
There are different federal loans(贷款)and private loans for students and parents. Interest rates on some of
these loans will go up on July first. As borrowing has increased, there are growing concerns that many students
graduate with too much debt.
In 1993, less than one-half of graduates from four-year colleges had student loans. Now two-thirds of them do.
Their average loan debt when they graduate is 19, 000 dollars.
The Project on Student Debt is an action group that collects numbers from reports. It notes that averages do
not present the full picture.
For example, in 2004, one-fourth of students graduated with more than 25, 000 dollars in debt. And that did
not include borrowing from their parents. The Project on Student Debt says parents as well as students are
borrowing more to pay for college.
Students can expect to take about ten years to pay back their loans. Repayment does not begin until after they
are out of school.
Higher borrowing limits have helped push up stude nt debts. Students from all economic(经济的)levels are
borrowing more. Corrected for inflation(通货膨胀), student loans have increased around sixty percent in ten years.
Researchers say one effect is that the higher the debts, the more likely graduat es are to look only for high
paying jobs. That means there is less chance they will take jobs in areas like teaching or other public service.
A study done in 2002 for a major student lender found that debts can also affect lives in other ways. Some

students paying back their college loans said they delayed buying their first house. Some delayed marriage or
having children.
60. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Costly College, Worried Parents
B. The Project on Student Debt
C. Out of College, but Already in Debt
D. College Grad uates, Ten-years in Debt
61. According to the passage, we know it is NOT true that___.
A. both students and parents borrow money from banks to help pay for college
B. the average numbers collected from the report sometimes are not true
C. high debts cause some graduates to decline low paying jobs
D. students are getting bigger loans to pay for college than before
It notes that averages do not present the full picture.
economic levels are borrowing more.
62. Which of the following may be one of the causes of the rise of student debts?
A. The cost of a college education has been increasing.
B. Interest rates on college student loans have doubled.
C. The students can borrow as much as they can from the bank.
D. There was recently an increasing inflation in the United States.
63. What attitude does the author probably hold towards the student loans?
A. Worried.
B. Supportive.
C. Opposed.
D. Subjective.

T- uniforms in
School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U. S. A. . That’s no surprise, because they
offer many benefits.
They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students
are dressed in the same way, they will not pa y too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be
laughed at for wearing the “wrong” clothes.
Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a
kind of rule—wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for
themselves cre school uniforms tear those barriers down.
As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example,
when a man or
woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform
means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People
with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their
task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.
parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children’s
“creativity”. First,
as noted above,
the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their
individuality (个性). They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as
they like. While they’re in school, their job is to master reading,
writing, this would take up all the
creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to
the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also
want their children to take extra-curriculum(课程) activities where they either learn a musical instrument(乐
or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more
expensive an education is, the better it is, so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education.
Even poor couples buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very
cheap. Parents can see that their children’ they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in
others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-
confidence(自信).
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice
tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident,
happy and clever.
Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other
housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands
patience and time.
It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking,
so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give
a child a lot of satisfaction(满意)and confidence.
An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him curious and
arouse his interest.
If he will spend hours looking at it, your child might become an engineer
when he grows up. Such activities do more than teach a
but rather they teach them to think,
